The new iPhone 14 release: What we know so far

Even though the iPhone 14 is still months away, reliable leaks about Apple’s upcoming lineup of flagship devices began early and are still coming in at an increasing amount.

After speaking about what to expect from the upcoming iOS 16 Apple update, we wanted to delve deeper into what we could find out about the new iPhone 14.

The rumours began before the iPhone 13, with some leaks from that phone transferring to the iPhone 14. While there is no shortage of iPhone rumours, we will focus on the most reliable sources to ensure a reasonable level of certainty that the leaks are accurate.

With that prologue out of the way, here’s a look at everything we’ve learned about the iPhone 14, including the expected release date, pricing, design, specs, and more.

iPhone 14 Specifications

The A16 Bionic processor is the most significant spec update for the iPhone 14. Take into account that the name may change. Ignoring the title, the rumour suggests that the processor will be upgraded to a 4-nanometer process from the current 5nm process used by the A14 Bionic and the A15 Bionic in the iPhone 13. This should result in a more significant performance boost than we saw with the A15.

However, if you’re considering getting an iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Max, put your A16 party hats away because, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, only the Pro models will get the new chip, and only the Pro models will get an upgrade to LPDDR5 RAM.

iPhone 14 Design

However, the most significant iPhone 14 rumour comes from the dependable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested in a research note that Apple may finally do away with the notch with the iPhone 14. While Apple is unlikely to depart from the fundamental iPhone 12 design, this is perhaps the biggest iPhone 14 leak yet.

This concept has gained traction, with Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants demonstrating a “hole + pill” design for the front-facing camera. Despite the fact that Ross specifies that this would be confined to the Pro models.

The main challenge is keeping Face ID secure despite the smaller form factor. This is where a Bloomberg report deviates slightly, saying Apple will only further reduce the notch on the iPhone 14, but ultimately getting rid of it is still a ways off.

iPhone 14 Cameras

The cameras could be one of the most significant year-over-year improvements for the iPhone 14. Again quoting an investor note from Ming-Chi Kuo, he predicts that the iPhone 14 Pro will come equipped with a 48MP primary wide-angle camera. On the other hand, Apple has done a better job of enhancing the effectiveness of its 12MP sensors.

The Pro models may also include a periscope zoom lens, similar to those in Android flagships such as the Galaxy S21 Ultra. This one is undoubtedly a little more flimsy.

Another camera rumour getting pushed to the sidelines is the addition of sensor-shift optical image stabilization to all four models. This technology significantly improves image quality, which enhances video and low-light photography.

iPhone 14 Release Date

With the exception of the iPhone 12, which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, new flagship iPhones are typically announced and made available in September.

Last year, pre-orders for the iPhone 13 series began on Friday, September 17, and the phones went on sale on September 24. On Tuesday, September 6, or Tuesday, September 13, Apple may hold its fall event for the iPhone 14. The date isn’t confirmed, but it would make sense given the company’s pattern of events.

iPhone 14 Pricing

If history repeats itself, we can expect the iPhone 14 to start at $649 and the iPhone 14 Max to start at £625 / $749. If Apple follows suit with last year’s pricing structure, the iPhone 14 Pro will cost £830 / $999, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max will cost £915 / $1,099.

Keep in mind that these are all starting prices, and that each model will likely have different storage capacities that will affect the final cost. For example, the iPhone 13 Pro starts at £830 / $999 for 128GB of storage, but if you want 512GB, you’ll have to shell out £999 / $1,199. So, take these pricing predictions with a grain of salt.

What we want to see in the iPhone 14

Now that we’ve gone over all the juicy rumours, it’s time to talk about what we want to see from the iPhone 14. These are features that either haven’t been rumoured or are unlikely to come to fruition, but we can dream, right?

OLED displays

First and foremost, we want to see an OLED display on all four iPhone 14 models. The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max have gorgeous OLED screens, while the standard iPhone 12 and 12 mini feature less-impressive LCDs. It’s not a deal-breaker by any means, but it would be nice to see Apple unify its lineup with OLED across the board.

Battery life

We’d also like to see better battery life from the iPhone 14. The iPhone 12 series offers solid battery life, but there’s always room for improvement. Hopefully, Apple can eke out a bit more juice from the iPhone 14 without making the phone too thick.

Fast charging

Finally, we hope Apple includes a faster charger in the box with the iPhone 14. The company started including 20W chargers with the iPhone 11, but that’s still not enough to take full advantage of fast charging on the iPhone 12. We’d like to see a 30W or even a 45W charger included in the box, so you can charge your phone more quickly when you’re in a hurry.
